Understanding Continence Assessments: A Path to Better Management

At Health N Home®, we offer in-home and Telehealth continence assessments to help individuals better understand and manage their incontinence conditions. Our goal is to support you in maintaining confidence and independence while managing urinary or bowel issues.

What is a Continence Assessment?

A continence assessment is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a qualified Continence Nurse Specialist. This assessment helps to identify the underlying causes of incontinence, which in turn allows us to provide tailored care and recommendations for managing your condition. Whether you are dealing with urinary incontinence, bowel incontinence, or both, we are here to guide you toward the right support and solutions.

What Happens During a Continence Assessment?

During your assessment, which generally lasts about 1.5 hours, our continence nurse will gather vital information to understand the root cause of your incontinence. The nurse will ask questions about your bladder and bowel habits, frequency of issues, medications, and diet. Additionally, they may request a physical examination and even a urine test to gain a complete picture of your condition.

Preparing for Your Continence Assessment

Before your appointment, it’s helpful to maintain a bowel and bladder diary for at least 3 days. This will help provide a clearer understanding of your symptoms. Along with the diary, compiling a list of your current health conditions, medications, and any other relevant information will also be useful to share during the assessment.

What Happens After the Assessment?

Following the assessment, we will work with you to develop a personalized care plan. This plan may include product recommendations, toilet training guidance, recurring services, and check-in appointments to ensure you manage your incontinence successfully. A comprehensive report will be provided to you and your support team to ensure everyone involved in your care stays informed.

By taking part in a continence assessment, you are taking the first step toward regaining control over your life and managing your condition with confidence.
